That’s when our team stepped in.

We conducted a full basement inspection and quickly identified several points where water was seeping into the home. To give this homeowner a permanent waterproofing solution, we designed a custom plan using the following products:

CleanSpace Vapor Barrier: This bright white liner was installed on the basement walls to create a clean, moisture-resistant barrier that also helps block vapor and humidity from entering the basement.

WaterGuard Interior Drain System: We installed WaterGuard around the perimeter of the basement floor to collect any incoming water and direct it to a sump pump before it can reach the interior space.

SuperSump Pump System: A reliable, powerful sump pump was added to actively remove any collected water from the home. It features a high-volume pump with a sealed lid to help keep moisture and odors contained.

IceGuard Discharge Line Protection: To prevent water backups during freezing Minnesota winters, we installed IceGuard to allow water to escape even if the discharge line becomes frozen or blocked outside.

Despite the complexity of the problem, our experienced crew completed the project in just two days. The homeowner was amazed not only by the speed but by the professionalism and cleanliness of the installation process.

Now that the basement is dry, protected, and mold-resistant, the homeowner can finally begin restoring the space. Whether they want to recreate their family room, a guest suite, or a just use it for storage of their memories, they now have the freedom to use their basement without fear of flooding.

More importantly, their air quality has drastically improved. Without the constant moisture and musty odor, the entire home feels fresher and healthier.

For years, a homeowner in Mankato, MN battled a problem that many hope to never face: regular flooding in their finished basement. What was once a cozy and functional living space had turned into a recurring nightmare. Every heavy rain or snowmelt brought new water intrusion, and with it came damaged belongings, ruined paneling and flooring, and a musty odor that never truly went away.

The flooding didn’t just take a toll on their personal property; it also started affecting their air quality and overall health. Mold and mildew began to take root in hidden corners, creating an unsafe environment for the family. After multiple attempts to manage the water on their own, and frustration mounting with every storm, they knew it was time to call in professionals.

After reaching out to our team at Complete Basement Systems, we scheduled a free on-site inspection. Our expert thoroughly assessed the basement, identifying the main sources of water intrusion and the reasons for poor moisture control.

Following the inspection, we presented a detailed, customized estimate that outlined the scope of work and the products we would use to protect the home. The homeowner was impressed with our clear communication, long-term warranties, and our proven waterproofing system.

To address the basement issues and ensure long-lasting protection, we installed the following:

WaterGuard Interior Drainage System: Installed along the interior perimeter, this drainage system captures incoming water at the wall-floor joint and redirects it away from the home.

CleanSpace Wall System: A heavy-duty vapor barrier that covers basement walls, helping to seal out moisture and direct any wall seepage into the WaterGuard system.

SuperSump Pump System: A powerful, reliable sump pump with a built-in liner, airtight lid, and floor drain that efficiently removes water from the basement.

LawnScape Outlet: Installed outside the home, this discreet discharge line outlet allows water from the sump pump to safely exit away from the foundation, preventing it from recycling back into the basement.

Thanks to the installation of these proven products, the Madelia homeowner now has a dry, clean, and odor-free basement, regardless of the weather. The musty smells are gone, there's no standing water after storms, and the home’s indoor air quality has significantly improved.

The homeowner was thrilled with the professionalism of our crew and the efficiency of the entire installation process. They are now confident their basement will stay dry for good.

This homeowner in Madelia, MN was growing increasingly frustrated with their wet, musty basement. Moldy smells lingered, water stains were spreading, and the overall air quality in the home was declining. They were ready for a permanent, professional solution that would give them back peace of mind.

The Solution: Stabilize, Seal, and Drain

PowerBrace Wall Support System
To address the bowing walls, we installed the PowerBrace system. This system consists of steel I-beams that are anchored to the basement floor and joists above. Over time, the PowerBrace system can be tightened to help straighten the wall while immediately halting further movement.

CleanSpace Wall Vapor Barrier
To manage water seepage and improve the aesthetics of the basement, we installed CleanSpace, a heavy-duty vapor barrier. This bright white liner covers the interior walls, blocking moisture and directing any leaks into the drainage system.

Unlike traditional French drains, WaterGuard is installed above the footing to avoid clogging from soil or debris.

SuperSump Sump Pump System
To handle the captured water, we installed the SuperSump, a high-performance sump pump system with a reliable cast-iron pump and airtight lid. It also includes a WaterWatch alarm to alert the homeowner to any rising water levels. This upgrade ensures long-term peace of mind and efficient removal of groundwater.

This comprehensive system was completed in just 2 days by our installation team. The homeowner now has peace of mind, knowing their basement is safe, dry, and structurally sound. we delivered a solution that not only fixed the current issues but also prevented future ones.

To restore the structural integrity of the basement and implement a long-term waterproofing strategy, we installed a multi-component system specifically designed to address both wall movement and moisture intrusion in this home:

CleanSpace Wall System: A heavy-duty 20-mil vapor barrier was permanently fastened to the foundation walls. This system blocks the interior environment from moisture seeping through wall cracks and pores and directs any wall seepage downward into the drainage system.

WaterGuard Interior Drainage System: We excavated along the interior perimeter of the basement slab using a jackhammer to install WaterGuard, which is a specially engineered drainage channel placed above the footing and along the base of the foundation walls. This system collects water entering from the wall-floor joint and wall cracks, then channels it to the sump system without risk of clogging from soil or debris.

TripleSafe Sump Pump System: To reliably manage collected groundwater, we installed the TripleSafe system, which includes three pumps in one unit. The primary ⅓ HP cast iron pump handles normal water loads, the secondary pump activates if the primary fails or is overwhelmed, and a third, battery-powered backup pump provides protection during power outages. This system ensures uninterrupted operation during high-demand or emergency scenarios.

This integrated solution provided both structural reinforcement and a reliable, high-capacity waterproofing system, effectively stabilizing the foundation and eliminating water intrusion risks.

A homeowner in Mankato, MN was facing serious foundation and water intrusion problems in her basement. The most critical concern was the appearance of horizontal and stairstep cracks along the block foundation walls, which are classic signs of hydrostatic pressure pushing laterally against the home.

Hydrostatic pressure occurs when the soil surrounding the foundation becomes saturated and holds more water than it can drain. This excess moisture puts constant force on the walls, which can worsen with seasonal freezes and thaws. Over time, this pressure causes the walls to shift and bow inward, leading to active wall displacement. If left unaddressed, these early warning signs can progress to full foundation wall failure, compromising the structural integrity of the home.

In addition to structural problems, the basement was affected by regular water intrusion, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall or snowmelt. The home was equipped with an aging sump pump that lacked the capacity to keep her basement dry. As a result, the basement remained damp, leading to water damage, mold risk, air quality concerns, and further deterioration of the foundation.

To permanently resolve the issue, we installed our comprehensive basement waterproofing system. This included the WaterGuard drain tile system, which plays a major role in managing groundwater. Installed along the perimeter of the basement floor, just above the footing, WaterGuard is designed to intercept water before it reaches the living space. It collects seepage from the walls and floor joints and discreetly channels it to a sump pump system. Unlike traditional drain tile systems that sit in the dirt and can clog over time, WaterGuard rests in a bed of clean rock and is specially engineered to remain clear and low-maintenance, ensuring long-term performance without the risk of blockages.

We also installed the CleanSpace vapor barrier, which seals the walls and prevents moisture from entering the air, creating a bright, clean appearance while stopping mold-promoting humidity. Lastly, we installed the TripleSafe Sump Pump System, engineered for optimal water evacuation. It features a three-pump configuration: a primary pump for regular use, a secondary pump for high-demand scenarios, and a battery-powered backup pump to maintain operation during power outages. The system is housed in a sealed basin with an airtight lid designed to prevent vapor intrusion, odors, and debris from entering, ensuring long-term performance and basement protection.

With these proven solutions working together, the basement is now dry, healthy, and protected from future water intrusion. The homeowner can now enjoy peace of mind knowing their home’s foundation is secure, air quality is improved, and the basement is finally a safe, usable space.

This homeowner in Lake Crystal, MN, was dealing with ongoing and frustrating water intrusion in their basement. After every heavy rain or snow melt, water would find its way inside. Over time, this consistent moisture led to musty odors, visible signs of water damage, and mildew and mold growth. The basement had become a damp, uninviting space that was unusable for storage or living. Worse, the moisture was affecting the overall air quality in the home, contributing to a humid and unhealthy indoor environment. The homeowner knew they needed a long-term solution, not just to stop the water, but to protect their home’s value and their family’s health.

Ron suggested our WaterGuard System which intercepts water at the perimeter of the basement and drains it safely away. He also let Nic know that the CleanSpace Wall System, SuperSump sump pump, and LawnScape Discharge with IceGuard would be ideal to keep his basement dry for good.

Our Crew Leader Justin K put his team to work on installing these top-of-the-line products. They jackhammered around the perimeter of the basement floor, demoed the damaged walls, and prepared a spot for the new sump pump.

Once the WaterGuard is laid into the trench around the perimeter, it is surrounded with rock to allow for the water to move freely. It is then covered with cement to create a flush, usable floor that you can easily lay flooring over.

The CleanSpace Wall System is a bright, clean, durable vapor barrier that creates a cosmetically nice wall, as well as stops water vapor from permeating the walls. This was installed on the bottom half of the basement walls on this project.

The SuperSump Justin's team put in is the finest sump pump system available. It has an airtight lid, so nothing can fall into the sump hole. Items can be stacked on top, no storage space is lost! It is also equipped with a WaterWatch Alarm System which alerts the homeowner if the water rises above the point that the pump should turn on. This gives ample warning to address the problem before damage occurs.

The LawnScape is a buried discharge line that the team will go back in the Spring when the ground is thawed to complete. They will also install our patented IceGuard System which allows water to escape through its openings so that even if the pipe freezes or has a blockage, the water will not back up into your basement.

If you want to learn more about any of the products used on this project, or would like to set up a FREE estimate with our design specialist, please give us a call!

Nic contacted us for assistance with drying up his finished basement in Jackson, MN. There was water seeping in and damaging the walls and floors. This was a concern not only for the appearance of the basement but also for the health of his family. Upon removing some of the wall paneling, visible mold growth on the sheetrock was discovered. Mold can pose health risks to people of any age. The best way to deal with it is to prevent it from happening. We sent our Design Specialist Ron out to assess the situation and see how we could help.

As a homeowner, it can be difficult to see if water is causing damage in your finished basement. Flooring and sheetrock can mask the first stages of water intrusion. Damp or humid air, staining or blistering on wall surfaces, or musty/mildewy odors can mean there is water intrusion doing damage behind the sheetrock or under the laminate floors. Our Design Specialist found evidence of water damage on the baseboards and door frames. This homeowner was using multiple fans, running an over-the-counter dehumidifier, and had containers of Damp-Rid throughout her basement to try to stay on top of it. But we wanted to prevent instead of treat the water issue.

After a free no obligation estimate, we were ready to transform Irma's basement and crawl space. We wanted to ensure that Irma's residence would stay healthy and safe for years to come, and this required installing our industry leading waterproofing and crawl space products.

First, we tackled the crawl space project and installed the CleanSpace Liner System on the floor and walls of her crawl space. This is going to isolate her home from the ground, leaving it look so much brighter and cleaner.

Next the waterproofing project. The perimeter floor around the home needs to be broken out to properly install our WaterGuard Drainage System. CleanSpace is also installed on the walls in the basement and is a vapor barrier to protect from moisture, mold and water leakage. Any water seepage from the walls, then drains into the WaterGuard Drainage System installed below it. The Waterproofing system will be equipped with a SuperSump Pump System to pump the water out of the basement to a buried discharge line.

We also updated Irma's basement windows that are all vinyl, energy efficient that will not rot. These EverLast Basement Windows will look much better and don't let wind in and have double pane glass.

The entire project only took our installation team 3 days to complete. Irma was sure impressed by the crews professionalism during the installation and could not believe how clean her basement looks.

Irma W. of Belle Plaine, MN was referred to Complete Basement Systems by a previous customer of ours to address her water problem in her unfinished basement. She also has a crawl space that would cause an odor throughout the rest of her home.

She uses the basement for storing many personal items and had a hobby space in the basement that she would work in and the basement just always had a musty smell to it and got frustrated with that, and finally called the professionals in for some help.

During an inspection at the home with Irma, our system design specialist observed the area where Irma had noticed the problem with water and looked at the exposed dirt crawl space.

What happens with water intrusion in the basement, starts from when your home is built and when all that loose backfill/soil is disrupted, is where water collects and keeps collecting. All that water causes pressure on the foundation and over time causes so much pressure it seeps up through the floor and wall joint of the home. Most existing drrain tile installed in homes have clogged at that point as well, so water really has no place to go.

When a crawl space has an exposed dirt floor beneath our home, our home enviornment is exposed to the water transmission vapors that come from the ground. We get insects, rodents, mold and funky odors.

We're so happy Irma contacted Complete Basement System and trusted us to turn her basement and crawl space into a clean, healthy living area again!

When the lower level was first waterproofed the problem we are addressing here, had never had any water intrusion. What happens over time, is that the same reason the other part of a basement or lower level leak, can in fact happen in another area, sometimes years later.

Its always recommended to do a full perimeter waterproofing system to ensure a dry, livable space. Doing a complete system saves everyone time, money and work with all the preparations and post installation rebuilding. Our customers understood that and we always hear "I wish we did this the first time".

Either way, we are always here to respond to homeowners experiencing these problems, anytime.

Complete Basement Systems installation team got to work and completed the WaterGuard system around the perimeter of the library's lower level. The maintenance team at the library did fantastic demolition to ensure an efficient installation.

Scott from the Morgan Library had this to share with our company after the installation, "The professionalism of the company is outstanding. Great information on your service and great people to work with!"

Previous customers of Complete Basement Systems, the Morgan Public Library experienced water intrusion in a different area in the lower level of the library.

During a routine maintenance on the sump pump system installed, we inspected the problem areas and determined to finish the WaterGuard system previously installed and addressing the walls to prevent water seepage as well.

The maintenance director needed to demo the space for proper installation and needed a quick turn around time to open the space back up for the public sooner rather than later.

Always strving for customer satisfaction, Complete Basement Systems was up for the challenge to make this all happen in a reasonable timeline for both the Morgan Library staff and guests to get back to business as usual for all.

After a free, no obligation estimate, we were ready to transform this leaky wall crack to ensure a dry, safe space for our customers to finish off. We wanted to ensure that this homeowner's residence would stay healthy and safe from water for years to come, and this required installing our industry leading waterproofing product for wall cracks.

First line of defense to stop the crack leakage is to inject a bead of sealant. Next a foam drain strip is placed over the wall crack so any amount of water that manages to leak through the first seal, seeps down the foam strip in the the drainage below. Lastly a sealant overlay is placed over the foam strip. This is a tough, flexible product that is waterproof and permanent. The product installed is called FlexiSpan Wall Crack Repair System.

The FlexiSpan system has a 5 year warranty from the time of installation where the system was installed. The FlexiSpan system warrants that if the wall cracks or wall penetration specifically treated with the FlexiSpan will not leak.

Overall, Our homeowners were quite happy with the service Nate Barke provided for them, being very prompt and timely with repairing the wall crack for them!

Wes & Sara F. of St Bonifacius, MN moved into their home in 2013 and had no problems with water in the lower level until recently in the spring on 2018. It appeared to them after removing some finished walls in the basement doing a remodel, a crack was found and water had been finding its way through the crack in the poured foundation wall.

Being resourceful people, they knew just who to call. A relative that has worked at Complete Basement Systems for over 20 years helping homeowners with these types of problems everyday! Nate Barke advised that he would need to stop by and inspect the problem to determine the best solution before they completed their remodeling project to finsh the space off.

Foundation cracks are common, especially on poured foundations like this home. Many times sealants can stop the wall crack from leaking, but what happens is the foundation continues to expand and will cause that filled area to still leak. This is not something they wanted because of the plan to finish off the space to make as a livable area in their home.

The crawl space is now ready for installing the CleanSpace Liner along the floor and walls of the crawl space. This will permanently seal out the vapor coming from the dirt floor. The CleanSpace Liner is a 20 mil thick barrier that is blue on one side and white on the other side. The liner has a built in antimicrobial backing that will prevent mold growth.

Complete Basement Systems qualified design specialist, Nick Barke guided them to a solution to solve the problem. Nick's 20+ years experience in the field of installing and designing systems for homeowners, made our customers feel confident that they called the right place.

The installation involved digging a trench along the problem area and install a TrechDrain system that would capture the water at the point of entry and channel any water flow into a sump pump system, our SuperSump.

We also set the homeowners up with suitable flooring using ThermalDry Tile in the Canyon Beige color. The Flooring is a waterproof subfloor with a finished look that can handle water without damaging it, unlike carpet or other flooring that is not able to handle water. The tiles have pegs to create an airspace under your floor, which keeps water vapor from getting trapped underneath your finished floor, which if that happens can cause odors and mold.

Upon completion of the job, our customer was very happy to review her experience on facebook!

"Ben did a great job. He called before arriving and check with me before making a small adjustment to the plan. Great to work with, neat work, and very friendly."

The problem is there was no place for that water to go, but into their basement floor. So imagine walking through the door after a long day at work and open the door to go into your home and you walk right into standing water. Frustrated is what you are probably feeling. The last thing you wanted to do is clean up work in the basement.

It's easy to ignore that quiet piece of equipment in your utility room, until its too late and your basement is wet.

This is a time of the year when our office and service team generate many calls about sump pumps. It's been months since homeowners have heard their sump pump run, and suddenly, they are noticing it running constantly.

Every home can be different as to how often a sump pump will run. We have customers who tell us they hear their sump pump run ALL year long, winter, summer, etc.

Some customers unplug their sump pump in the winter because it's cold and don't think it will run (Not recommended). You should never unplug your sump pump system. When it needs to run, you will want it to run. I recall on Christmas Day, 2016, Southern Minnesota had received a few inches of rainfall... In December! When the ground is frozen and we get a rainfall like that, water will find its way into those gaps between the ground and the foundation of your home. I know personally, my TripleSafe Sump Pump System ran continuously all winter that year!

We recommend to our customers that a routine maintenance on sump pump systems be inspected about every 15 months. Inspecting the sump pump system at different times of the year allows us to see the sump pump conditions and how they are performing in each season.

We clean out the sump liner, pull out the motor and components that sit in dirty water all year, and clean off all the sediment and silt that builds up over time. Interestingly, we can find rodents and other unusual items in the sump basket. Mice, tree roots, cat litter to name a few of the items we've cleaned out of sump liners.

Our service technicians also do a check on the outside of the home to ensure proper discharge of the sump pump water. It's a good idea to have it move away as far as possible and pointing downhill or to the lowest spot of your yard. If you have a flex hose (black perforated plastic pipe) and you are tired of moving that darn thing to mow your lawn, consider a buried discharge line.

There is so much more to this service maintenance than just your sump pump. Our technicians meet with about 1500 homeowners each year. If it wasn't important, we wouldn't need to offer this service. Homeowners spend a lot of money on a waterproofing system to protect their basement from a potential flood; we find things that would affect pump operation all the time.

Business owners, husband and wife, parents, and grandparents - Victor and Kathy wear a lot of hats. Here's an exclusive insight into what their experience has been owning a family business, and who they are as a family outside of the office!

It all started in 1975. Backed by years of fundamental work experience, Victor saw the need for better basement waterproofing options. In order to make the biggest impact, he knew he would need to start his own business, so he opened shop as Complete Carpentry & Remodeling. During this time, he continued to research efficient waterproofing options, and then stumbled upon an advertisement that caught his eye: Basement Systems was looking to partner with local contractors to become exclusive waterproofing dealers. The uniquely designed systems backed by patented products was all it took for Victor to know that this was exactly what Southern Minnesota needed. And, with that, Complete Basement Systems was founded.

That same year, Victor set his eyes on something else: love. One evening, Kathy went out with some friends to a local establishment called the Hurdy Gurdy Saloon in downtown Mankato. A short time later, Victor also stopped down at the restaurant with some friends, and it took just one look for Victor to know that this was the woman of his dreams.

Today, 41 years later, Complete Basement Systems is flourishing, and Victor and Kathy are happily married with two children and five grandchildren. The couple has managed to continue to build the company on a foundation of family, and treat every employee as if they’re part of the Barke crew. “Running and operating a family business is the most rewarding and challenging thing we’ve ever done,” said Victor.

Despite the challenges that come with owning a business, Victor and Kathy beam from ear to ear when thinking about the future of the organization. “We are very passionate about watching our grandchildren grow up. We hope that someday they can own the family business. Third generation ownership would be absolutely fabulous,” smiled Kathy.

Outside of the office, Victor and Kathy love spending time outdoors with their family and friends. Truly living by the motto, “Work hard, play hard,” the couple enjoy camping, riding their ATVs, and vacationing with their children and grandchildren. “One of our favorite vacations each year is our annual 4th of July camping trip at Bluff Valley near Zumbro Falls, MN. The grandkids stay super busy swimming, riding bikes, tubing, and making s’mores over the campfire. They’ve also participated in the 4th of July parade each year, and have won awards for the best decorated bikes two years in a row!”

For Victor and Kathy, family is everything, and it shows both within and outside of work. Complete Basement Systems has been a success because at the core of it all, every employee is part of the family.

Because of the recent storms last week, many were left with flooded homes and nowhere to go. That's where two crew members from our Complete Basement Systems team stepped in to help.

Bob Knish and Jim Hanks from Complete Basement Systems of Mankato did not think twice when it came to helping out those in need last week when the storms settled in and the rain ensued. Both men worked tirelessly last week to help stranded and flooded residents near Waterville, MN pump water from their homes. They set up temporary sump pumps and drove back and forth from Mankato to Waterville getting supplies and things people needed to clean up the mess the rain left behind. Without their help, many of those people might still have sitting water and mold in their homes.

Thank you to Bob & Jim for all your hard work this week as well as everyone else that lent a helping hand on their own time to their neighbors in need.

The following are a few quick tips for homeowners who may have recently gotten their basement waterproofed by us.

Have you recently had one of our crews waterproof your basement? These are a few important tips regarding your new system!

1. Concrete takes some time to cure. Allow three to four days before replacing furniture or appliances. We recommend waiting three to four weeks before laying carpet or tile. Running a dehumidification System and/or fan will speed up the curing process.

2. It is normal for shrinkage cracks to appear in new concrete. It is also normal for the concrete to appear dry and then damp again during the curing process, especially after it rains.

3. Your sump pump should be plugged into a dedicated outlet at all times. An extension cord may be used temporarily, but it is not recommended for an extended period of time. In order to prevent flooding during power outages or pump failures, consider installing a battery back-up, if you haven't done so already.

4. Remember to keep gutters and downspouts free of leaves and debris. Make sure your downspouts stay connected and extend well away from the house.

5. 12-15 Months we will contact you for the annual maintenance on your basement waterproofing and sump pump system. Maintenance is important to clean the sump pump liner from silt and mud. We also flood test the system check the outside drainage, windows and grading.

7. ENJOY your new dry, safe, & livable basement!

Our System Design Specialist Team is made up of knowledgeable individuals that are, quite literally, basement gurus. The training program that they go through involves technical research, classroom training, and mentorship shadowing that lasts months. Here's an overview of what each and every one of our Design Specialists does prior to ever sitting down with you to discuss your basement goals:

Online training and research studies - Immediately after getting hired with Complete Basement Systems, each individual is sent home with over 80 hours of homework, all dedicated to basement issues and solutions.

Classroom training - Once the homework and research is complete, the individuals join together and undergo a week (about 50 hours) of in-house training with our Sales Manager, Ryan Powell, as well as specialists from around the nation via Skype.

Mentor shadowing - Each new team member is assigned to one or more experienced Design Specialists, and works with them on an ongoing basis for up to one year.

Ongoing training - Every member of our Design Specialist Team meets weekly to complete continuing education courses, discuss important topics, and to work together to resolve complex situations.

This training program is unlike any other in the industry, and our Design Specialist Team takes great pride in being not only certified to do what they do everyday, but to have a team surrounding them that acts as a support group to each other 24/7.

Ever wondered how the production team - that you are entrusting you basement to - is trained? You're not the only one!

Consistently, our customers rave about the work that the Production Team does in their basement or crawlspace. While we love fantastic reviews, it's definitely not by chance that we're getting this feedback. Extensive training goes into ensuring that every one of our teams works efficiently, professionally, and, well, as a TEAM.

The Hiring Process

We get hardworking individuals that apply throughout the year. Every individual goes through a rigorous hiring process to ensure that we feel that they will be a truly valuable asset to our team.

First, the applicants go through a basic phone screen interview where they are asked basic questions about work history, experience, and ability to consistently provide a strong work ethic.

Next, applicants are invited to come to our shop to meet the Production Manager, Nick Barke, and his assistant, Tricia Woitas. The job description is fully discussed - including all the heavy buckets that the team is expected to carry day in and day out (this is a deal-breaker for some!!).

If the applicant feels that he or she is able to conquer the job, (s)he is invited to the Friday morning meeting at 6:30AM sharp! The dedicated individuals that show up then go through a series of speed interviews with each of the foremen to determine which team would be the most fitting.

Training Program

Over the first month of employment with Complete Basement Systems, each individual is trained to be able to conquer the job as a co-foreman. We want every single one of our employees to be able to advance their careers at a pace that is fitting for them based on their prior work experience, overall work ethic, and passion for our company. All employees are graded both in the first month, and then throughout their careers on "key performance indicators" that are outlined in our training manual titled "Best Foot Forward" including some of the following:

Job site set-up (prepping the job site for production)

Efficiency (ability to plan ahead, focusing on "no wasted movements", never just standing around)

Safety

Proper clean-up after installation is complete

Professionalism with the customers, with the team, and with everyone they come in contact with!

Every single one of our fantastic foremen started with this training program, and many of them have been here for many, many years because they love the work they do and the support from a company they've come to love and respect.

Wet basements are more than an inconvenience in the spring when you're busy vacuuming out the water in your rain boots. That, unfortunately, is just the beginning.

One of the biggest issues we find with our customers is that previous basement problems are only partially fixed. Yes, it's always the "cheaper" solution, but it only solves what the eye can see, and completely ignores the biggest issues that have a tremendous effect on both your home and family's health.

Top 10 Damp Basement Effects:

Destroyed flooring - Talk about expensive. Sure, you can shampoo carpets to get rid of that musty smell... temporarily. However, very rarely does a simple shampoo really solve the problem. When water sits on flooring for even a short period of time, mold spores quickly develop, which are near impossible to truly eliminate without replacing the flooring.

Wall deterioration - Unless your walls are made of pure metal - and they're not - any dampness will cause the wall posts and sheetrock or other wall finishing products to slowly deteriorate.

Increased heating and cooling - When there is humidity in the air, which is caused by damp basements, it takes a lot more energy to cool and heat your home. After water is in your basement even once, you will literally be able to notice your energy bills increase substantially overnight.

Embarrassing odors - Nothing like watching the big game in your basement.... Big flatscreen, great surround sound, crock pots full of deliciously unhealthy foods that we all love.... and that distinct musty smell. You know what I'm talking about! That lingering odor is caused from mold... which all started the first time your basement had any sort of moisture in it that wasn't properly taken care of.

Decreased shingle life - Yes, that's right. Basement dampness causes problems that rise all the way to your attic. When there is humidity in the air, it forces shingles to crack and fold.

Ugly dust mites - This is the number one allergen in the U.S., and can cause all sorts of allergic reactions. Damp basements are the perfect environment for these allergens to grow and spread throughout your home very quickly.

Mold allergies - Have you ever noticed how great you feel when you travel somewhere, and then how you get stuffed up or groggy as soon as you get home again? It might be more than post-vacation blues. Mold spores float freely throughout your home's air, and cause all sorts of respiratory problems.

Increased allergy sensitivity for young ones - Infants and young children are more prone to showing effects of pollutants caused from damp basements, which can lead to life-long allergy issues.

Home sales - One of the biggest topics that realtors discuss with potential home-buyers is the basement. If there are any signs of basement dampness, it is the duty of the realtor to disclose this to the potential buyer, which obviously leads to a decreased likelihood of purchasing homes with these issues.

Radon - We've been hearing all about radon lately - the number one environmental cause for cancer deaths, and it is a big issue. While not related directly to basement dampness, radon is caused by the same foundation problems that come with water in one's basement.

Bottom line, if your home isn't sealed properly, there are a plethora of problems that you face as a homeowner.

Castle Rock, CO
April, 2009

My husband, Steve, worked an average of 10 hours a day in our basement for the past seven years. Recently lung cancer took his life. It was very quick; he was diagnosed at the end of January; and by the end of April, Steve died. His only symptom was coughing, and he was given antibiotics for bronchitis. Only when that didn’t work, did the physicians request a chest X-ray and begin to wonder what could be wrong. He only completed two chemo treatments, and then so many complications impeded his treatment.

This summer my neighbor was selling her house and was requested to have a radon test performed. The results were over 9 pCi/L. I had never heard of radon or anything about it, so I did research. When I got my home tested, the level was 10.1! If I had only known of the potential danger, perhaps . . .. I truly believe that the level of radon in our home accelerated Steve’s onset of lung cancer even though he smoked. Smokers or former smokers are at a much higher risk of lung cancer when exposed to high levels of radon gas.

Now I live with the “what ifs.” What effects may the radon levels have on my son or me? Every time I cough, I wonder, “Am I next.” For 17 years I have lived in Colorado, purchased two homes one old and one new and had home inspections. Not once did anyone mention “radon.” I can’t understand why there aren’t laws to require radon testing or mitigation like the ones that require smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Both homeowners and renters alike are loving this new trend, as there some definite advantages. However, there are some major boxes to check off before listing your basement "home" on Craigslist.

Waterproofing/foundation repair - If your basement is something you've been ignoring, today is the day to stop. Basements must be properly finished to legally rent it out to a tenant. Before buying that can of paint and those new appliances, get a certified basement specialist to do a consultation with you to ensure that the foundation is sealed correctly.

Mold inspection - Good luck keeping a tenant - and avoid getting sued - without doing a mold test first. Because basements all too often have moisture issues, mold is extremely common. The certified basement specialist should also be able to help ensure that there is no mold problems in the basement. (Check out this nightmare posted in the Star Tribune: http://www.startribune.com/lifestyle/homegarden/[[phone]].html)

City ordinance - Each town is a little different, so visit your local city hall to ensure that you have the right documentation necessary to rent out your basement.

For any and all questions related to prepping your basement for rent, be sure to contact Complete Basement Systems!

As if seeing -18 degrees on your car temperature gauge wasn't enough to send chills down your spine - literally - your basements fall victim to cold weather as well, causing future headaches come spring time.

You know how our roads react to extreme changes in temperature, right? Every winter, the cold weather forces the ground to shift, which then makes our roads cracked, bumpy, and down right unpleasant. Then, we get to deal with road construction all summer to repair the damages... Ahh, the vicious circle of commuting in the northern states.

Guess what? Your home's foundation acts the same way. In the winter, the cold weather forces the soil to contract, giving the foundation "extra room" and causing it to weaken. Then, in the springtime as the soil expands again, the soil pushes back against the foundation. The result? You guessed it: Foundation cracks.

These cracks cause a multitude of problems, from basement flooding to eventual mold problems. As if the physical issues weren't enough, these nasty mold spores then travel through the air in your home, and enter the lungs of your spouse and kids.

To prevent this scary chain of events, take precautions now. Unlike the vicious circle of repairing roads where construction workers are always playing defense, basements can take the ball into their own court by getting repaired and having a proper waterproofing system to prevent these problems from occurring in the future.

Don't wait to play defense this spring when it FINALLY warms up again. Call Complete Basement Systems for a free consultation today!
